Whether you’re a first-time or repeat visitor, vacation home owner, part-time local… living Montauk the local way is the only way.
Ever wonder what those who inhabit Montauk, from the depths of the bleakest winters to the highs of the sunniest summer days, and each day in between, do to stay entertained during the off-season? Continue reading to learn what some of our local friends do to enjoy their winters in Montauk.
Go Outside!
Yes, it might be cold. Yes, there may be wind gusts up to 50 MPH and a wind chill of 3-below… but get outside! Montauk’s nature in winter is unmatched with a unique, surrealist beauty. Bundle up, brave the cold, pick one of Montauk’s many beaches or parks, and hit the ground running. There is nothing more peaceful and rewarding than the entire white sand ocean beach to yourself, no matter the season.
Watch the Sunrise/Sunset!
During the winter months, Montauk’s stunning sunrises and sunsets become even more picturesque as changes in temperature and humidity cast the most incredible color palettes across our skies that are even more intense than our in-season sunrise and sunset hues. Unique cloud patterns over our beaches paint the most spectacular watercolors nearly every morning and night.
Get Creative!
The East End is bursting at the seams with creativity! A community full of artists, Montauk’s energy is artistic, creative, vibrant, and fun. Endless inspiration surrounds you here, so this is the perfect place to take up painting en plein air, nature photography and videography, printmaking and illustration, songwriting, poetry, creative writing… and so on. Take up a new artistic hobby and forge inspiration from Montauk’s incredible landscapes, people, and energy.
See the Seals!
Don’t forget to take a hike on the Seal Haul trail near Montauk Point State Park for a chance to see beloved local wildlife in their natural habitat. We have harbor seals all year round, but now is the season you will really see them! Between November and April, you can often find seals on both the north and south sides of Montauk.
Winter Surfing!
Step 1: Buy a winterproof wetsuit. Step 2: Rent a surfboard if you don’t have one already. Step 3: Ride down to Ditch Plains or Montauk Point to experience Montauk’s winter surfing culture.
Go Shellfishing!
Return to the East End’s Bonac roots and try your hand at shellfishing this winter. Be sure to do your research on the variety of wildlife and their seasons, then apply for any necessary permitting through East Hampton Town before you begin. Once you start, you’ll learn the ins and outs of how locals used to (and still do) live off of the land, harvesting shellfish to create delicious meals. Nothing will beat the reward of cooking up your own clams and scallops after a day on the beach.
Stay Inside!
We know–that cold and wind can just be too much to brave sometimes. For the days you can’t get outside, make a ritual out of staying cozy at home instead! Wrap up in a blanket, put on your favorite movie or grab your favorite book, and take this time for a much-needed recharge.
